The heat is off

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

After the light, now the heat has been removed from the tank.
The heater was needed in another tank for quarantaine purposes…. no electrical soccet remained after this.

Darkness all around

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

The heat has burst the small glass plate that seperated the light from the tank.

For now the light has been turned off and a new solution must be found….. maybe we could order a new lid for the tank and install some proper lighting?

New Areometer

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

The new Areometer has arrived and is being conditioned in the tank. It needs to remain there at least 48 hours for conditioning?

It’s one of these.

A new Areometer has been ordered from a large store in Rotterdam. This one is a wonderfull example of pure plastic! It will survive the brutal treatment salinity meters get here!

So far no Japonica have been spotted, but the experts agree: this is normal behaviour for them after the addition of new fish in the tank.

Everything else is ready for a new attempt. The breedingtank is coloring a light bright color green and some glass jars have been reserved for hatching the eggs.

And let there be life! 😉

I’m just afraid we still need to have some control of nitrogen levels though… Have to investigate if an ordinary Eheim (Ecco ?) canister filter is able to handle salt water conditions, and if so, how to limit the current so the larvaes won’t find themselves trapped inside a hurricane Katharina environment all the time..

Sea-water has arrived!

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

An independant benefactor has contributed a generous 75 ml of ocean water! Straight from Scheveningen!

The water was added to the 17 liters in the tank… and now we wait!

Innocent until proven guilty

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

After carefull consideration, I have determined that I like the Botia better than the shrimp they alledgedly killed. Many experts agree on the fact that I am blaming the Botia without probable cause, so I must plead them unguilty at the time. Even the resident detective claims their innocence.

Therefor the Botia stay and we hope the Japonica will surface again within a reasonable amount of time.

Shrimp supply

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Some new fish were added to the main tank (with the adult shrimp). Among these were Pterophyllum Altum and Botia Sidthimunki.

These botia have already killed a Attya moluccensis. Since they were added I have seen the Japonica only once, in hiding. This saturday the botia will be returned to the store, hopefully my japonica will reappear after this.

Little green men

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Some green gue is growing on the back glass of the tank and on the heater!

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

In order to try and culture some algae in the breedingtank some plantfood (5ml) and 2 squirts of MarinePlancton was added.

Also the light is on 24/7, the tempertature is a comfortable 24 degrees celsius and the pump is pumping away.

The likelyhood of something growing is exceedingly small however. What we need is fresh seawater…. anyone going to the beach?
